VEGETATION
In order to know about the plants species in Boreal Shield ecozone. We better divide the ecozone by 3 sections.
In the north and west of Boreal Shield, the low temperature, poorly growing seasons and acidic soils are pretty much challenges for plants. Only plants which with good adaptability and coniderous can grow well and healthily in this part of Boreal Shield. For example black spruce, white spruce, Jack pine and balsam fir.
In the further south part of Boreal Shield, broadleaf plants are normally found. Such as paper birch and poplar.
For some plants which require very warm and moist climate and environment such as yellow birch and sugar maple, the east of Boreal Shield is ideal places for them.
There are uncountable bogs, marshes and other wetlands which mix in the forests in Boreal Shield, covering 20% of the ecozone. In the south of Boreal Shield, some large wetlands have already been used to farm berries and they take up important positions in the world’s cranberries and blueberries markets.
The glaciers used to scour this ecozone, influenced by that, large amount of bare rocks are left behind which are hugged by lichen and shrubs.
The types of vegetations are still renewing by frequent forest fires in Boreal Shield. Fires kill pests and old, weak plants with disease. New plants will grow on the lands and make them full of life again.
